That when modern man pushed forth,
Possibly to interbreed
With Neanderthals up north,
Though they shared Europe's expanse,
They were races quite distinct,
Homo sapiens, more advanced.
Neanderthals caused to be extinct.
But when did modern man eyes laid
On Europe's plains and Europe's hills?
When did he managed to persuade
The “savages” to use his skills?
Perhaps 5000 years ahead
Of what was previously surmised,
Homo sapiens came, and led
With his more skilled enterprise.
The Neanderthals had not a chance
Against this wave of innovation.
Thus does human life advance,
In the march of civilization...
