The ancestors of humankind,
Crawled out of the ocean vast,
And left the water far behind,
To seek their fortune on the land,
And dwell, and propagate their genes,
Far from the oceans wet and grand
That were once their origin.
But some 50 million years ago
The whales reversed this history:
A furry creature left the land
To seek its fortune in the sea.
It's said it was a warming age:
the climate hotter far and wide.
Perhaps the creature tried to assuage
The burning feeling on its hide?...
Is that why dolphins, whales and such
Appear so curious about Man?
In their primordial memory, a snatch
Of common living on the land?
Will we, now that the earth is warming,
Change our lives to live in streams?
It's doubtful,- the whales at their dawning,
Had no air conditioning machines...
