Birds sing, “Keep of, it's my space!”
And the worker honeybee
Dances, to show blossoms' place.
Dogs wag tails, and kittens meow,
Mockingbirds others imitate,
Animals have leaned how
To signal to make sure to find their mate.
Fireflies in darkest night
Flash a code of their own kind,
And this eerie greenish light
Helps them one another find.
Monkeys use a different call
For a snake or for a hawk,
And Man's language – best of all
Expresses his thoughts as he talks.
But communication's use to cheat
Would seems to be Man's alone on earth,
Yet, this quite uncommon feat
Was discovered among some birds:
The sly drongo simulates
Some other birds; to fly away,
And when thy do, his hunger sates
By stealing their abandoned prey.
Thus the waggles and the cries,
And the clicks and caws and brays,
All some meaning signify,
What the species mean to say...
