We wonder who had built the odd structures of stone
In remote and various places:
Easter Islands' giant faces,
Rocks in Normandy and Ireland,
Temples in Tibetan highlands,
Towers in Uzbekistan,
Pyramids in Yukatan.
What of Stonehenge on the plain? -
Can we these great stones explain?
How have strong and ancient bands
Dragged the rocks o'er their land?
And why place them, so precise?
Were they foolish, were they wise?
These sophisticates sites,
Were they for religious rites?
For strange habits or ablations,
Astronomic observations?
Will our own structures make sense?
Many, many ages hence?
Our monuments and fountains,
Our ski runs in the mountains,
Our airports, our trains
Will a future sage explain?
And our highways, our roads,
Will be thought to please our gods?
So let's be cautious , circumspect,
As we theories erect,
And criticize the distant past,
Of which we have but little grasp,
About buildings and dimensions
Of which we have no comprehension ...
