When my birthday’s coming near,
Count the hours and the days,
For it to come my way.
But this year, when I’ll reach 97,
I expect a gift from heaven:
A very, very special gift
That’s bound to give my life a lift.
For, just about the date,
When I’ll my birthday celebrate,
My first great grandchild will embrace
Life, and join the human race.
I expect a joyful jolt,
When his/her first cry I behold,
A new sensation, and just when
I’ll reach seven and nine tens!
So I can definitely state:
This year I anticipate
This unique and glad sensation
Of the double celebration!
And I harbor a new hope
That I will manage to cope
With my slow and halting ways
In my slow, declining days,
And see the child’s uncertain walk,
And hear the baby’s babbling talk...
