In the heady Trumpian days,
Watching odd-ball Trumpian ways,
We marvel at his exhilaration.
With his many proclamations.
We observe the Trumpian antics
And his statements, his semantics,
And ’midst all Trumpian confusion
We come to the firm conclusion
That one day we’ll surely find,
From the Presidency he resigned,
For his businesses’ demand
Interfered with jobs at hand.
Then, without pain or offense,
We’ll have to deal with VP Pence...
2. Shakespeare in the Park
Shakespeare in the Park
Is usually a lark,
But this year- an exception,
From Trump folks an objection:
They raised a loud alarm:
The play is doing harm,
Complaining with a grump.
The play is mocking Trump!
They claimed the play’s composer
Cast Trump as Julius Caesar -
A Democratic ruse,
Their champion to abuse!
Will this fuming and this rage
Politicize the stage?
Like in Shakespeare’s day
Give meaning to the play?
Or will a clever gent,
On mischief clearly bent,
Discover, it appeared
The Russians interfered?...
3. Frustration
Trump’s anger and frustration
At U.S., power separation
Causes outbursts, when he finds,
He cannot do what’s on his mind.
Though from his TV show retired,
He still likes shouting “You are fired!”
And, to quiet down his rage,
He seeks to write a Twitter page.
He’s not accustomed to conform
To the “rules” and to the “norms”
That he refuses to obey
In his quest to have his way.
Will he learn the essential
Ways of being “presidential?”
Or will he, one morning, blow his cool
And retire, like a fool?...
4. Alternative Facts
The Times has documented Trump’s misleading quotes
- A full page in tiny font, with dates and careful notes.
But even those untruthful words cannot for long endure,
Since how long they may be true one cannot be quite sure:
For even alternative reality is quickly laid to rest,
With other statements, just as false, and easy to contest,
Of uncertain longevity and permanence, to wit:
Often contradicted by the latest Twit...
5. Then and Now
Words have a short life in Trump’s atmosphere:
Once a promise is made, it’s no longer there.
Then: “I won’t touch Medicaid!”
Now: ”Medicaid is dead!”
Then: “I will curb Wall Street.”
Now: Wall Street rules, instead.
Then: ”I can do it all alone!”
Now: “Democrats say “nay!”
Then: “All the Muslims will be gone!”
Now: “The Courts are in the way!”
Trump is used to business talk -
Whatever he may say,
Cannot later be invoked,
When things get in the way.
But one dictum we can state:
It is becoming clear:
He could make America great
If he would disappear...
6. Puzzles
As Trump’s presidency evolves,
There are puzzles to be solved:
For his cabinet, he insists
To pick the worst person on his list;
He seems eager to offend
What appear to be his friends;
While exclaiming “Just you wait,
Everything will be just great!”
There is little sign to hope
From his twitters’ puzzling scope.
He appears to be intent
And, with confidence, content,
To destroy his legal stand,
As he deals with heavy hand
With his problems, so astute in
Defense of Russia’s Putin.
What is happening behind
Trump’s strange turnings of his mind?...
7. Regrets
Donald Trump is not content
He was elected president.
He never thought it was for real,
And now he’s stuck with this ordeal.
They tell him how to speak and act,
His every word they check for facts,
They criticize his every move,
And his ideas disapprove,
They even say his hands are small,
And do not show respect at all.
They claim the Russians made him win,
Keep bringing up Hillary’s spin.
He’s losing money, losing face, -
He never should have run that race!...
8. Promises, Promises
“Everything will be just fine!”
Was Trump’s oft repeated line,
But this optimistic anodyne.
Turned out not so.
For, once he faced reality,
Things turned out not what he said they’d be,
As was quite evident to see,
It simply was “no go.”
All the lofty exhortations,
All the happy expectations,
Gone, the exalted invocations,
And showmanship, and flair,
Trump was flummoxed by the facts,
And by how the country did react,
And his confused and rude attacks,
Turned out to be hot air.
So, he keeps altering his topics,
And gets caught in tales idiotic,
Improbable and myopic,
His anger to expose,
Obama’s at fault, he complains,
He “did nothing” he maintains,
To prevent the Russians, who sustained,
Hillary to oppose...
9. Russians?
Why is Trump so adamant,
And rejects them, out of hand,
Anybody’s suppositions
He played footsy with the Russians?
Is it – though he never said it -
They were a source of ready credit,
And advanced sums substantial
For his entanglements financial?
Or was it simple pride,
The thought he could not abide,
And his confidence was lacking
He‘d win without Putin’s hacking?
Whatever may be the cause,
He suddenly becomes morose,
And excessively provoked,
When the Russians are invoked...
10. What’s Next?
I think that “clearing up the mess”
Is much easier said than done,
And so, Trump is under distress,
And sulks, instead of having fun.
His instincts he finds hard to curb,
And his temper to control,
And so, he’s constantly disturbed
By the “unfairness” of it all.
And while advisors try entice
Him to control his ways,
He seldom listens to advice,
And ventures on his own foray.
This state of tension cannot last,
And unless some way out is found,
There will be a resounding blast,
And great disaster all around...
11. Pattern
Trump, when faced with a disaster,
His reply attempts to master,
As he seems to always stick
To his proven bag of tricks:
First comes a complete denial,
And at “wait it out” a trial.
“It did not happen, it’s a plot
Of some disgruntled Democrat.”
Next comes, to try distraction
With a bizarre Twitter action:
Twitters that make little sense,
Not pertinent to the offense.
But, with what seems erratic rambling,
And with often plain dissembling,
He accepts it and defies it,
While his companion still denies it.
Then, with magnanimous contempt,
He may accept the foul event,
But diminish it in scope,
That it will go away, in hope.
Finally, a full admission,
With a stern admonition;
“Yes, it happened, and so what?
Doesn’t matter a great lot!”
And he always blames Obama,
As we watch the panorama
Of defiance and contempt,
Awaiting the next incident...
12. Watching Trump
When the press
Cause Trump distress,
And provoke a reaction,
He fumes all night,
And at dawn’s light
Tweets a strong distraction.
This tweet intense
May not make sense
To the initial story,
Yet the odd facts
Mean to distract,
And make things honky-dory.
When brand-new tales
New facts unveil,
Of Russian interference,
The tweets react
With made-up facts,
Without reason or coherence,
As we behold
The facts unfold
In worried contemplation,
And, like as not,
The tangled plot
Envelops our nation.
13. Trump’s Truth
President Trump
Is in a slump,
With his agenda stalled.
His statements bold
Strange things unfold
That make no sense at all.
His daily twit
Events admit
That he before denied.
His friends forget
With whom they met,
And who was on whose side.
His errant ways,
And what he says,
Beg the question, why
He makes up facts
And strangely acts
To credibility defy.
His every word
Sound strange, absurd,
And cannot be believed.
For his distress
He blames the press,
And conspiracies perceives.
14. Angry
Trumps’s odd antics
And semantics
Leave us quite perplexed,
His contradictions,
His afflictions
Show, he’s always vexed:
Time he could spend
To great extent
His fortune to extend,
He whiles away
In silly ways
At being president...
Who said, that’s so,
One can’t make dough,
While cabinets convene?
He will contest,
And not divest,
To conform to someone’s scheme.
He thought he’d be at ease,
And doing what he’d please,
And not entangled in a holy mess,
The Congress, courts,
Refuse to be good sports,
And cause distress...
15. Pardon Himself?
For which potential crime can Trump
Pardon himself decide?
What disaster can he dump
And glibly cast aside?
Is it some fancy money laundering”?
Default on shady deals?
Is it obstruction, or something
Else that to his mind appeals?
There is no dearth of reasons dire,
So he has to figure out,
What it is that he desires
On his Twitter tout.
He should find the very scheme
His business to advance,
For whenever can he dream
Yo have so great a chance?
He may as well try for the lot!
Pardon all future crimes!
For such a lucky break will not
Occur another time!
